Providing training and support within the framework of a cohesive and objectives-led project can help to ensure investment of time and resource is worthwhile, and leads to concrete benefits for children.

  • ERS Quality Improvement Project 2011-16

    Aims:

    • To build provider capacity to lead self-evaluation and quality improvement, both individually, and via networks or clusters
    • To sustain and build on the quality improvement work already carried out by the local authority

    Elements:

    • Awareness briefings for practitioners to engage them in the project
    • Rolling programme of self-evaluation training for centre-based providers and childminders, including leadership and management training
    • Observation Training to extend expertise following self-evaluation training
    • Support for practitioners to become Environment Rating Scales ‘mentors’, enabling them to support other settings
    • Training and moderation for the local authority team in ECERS and ITERS

  • Early Learning for Two Year Olds Pilot Project 2011-12

    Aims:

    • To build capacity for high quality two year old provision within Tower Hamlets

    Elements:

    • 5 day self-evaluation training for a group of 13 settings taking part in the DfE funded pilot project
    • Baseline and follow-up ITERS audits to assess the impact of training and other support provided by Tower Hamlets as part of the pilot (e.g. ECAT training, advisory support)
    • Observation training and moderation for Tower Hamlets early years advisers to enable them to carry out observations to support quality improvement

  • ‘ECERS/ITERS Hub Project’ 2013-14

    Aims:

    • To establish a Nursery School in Brent as a Centre of Excellence for ECERS and ITERS
    • To create a peer support network of ECERS/ITERS quality champions within Brent, with the Nursery School at the centre
    • To develop a small team of expert ECERS observers within Brent, with the knowledge and capacity to carry out accurate observations and to support settings in their ECERS/ITERS work

    Elements:

    • Awareness briefing for settings and schools
    • Baseline and follow-up ECERS/ITERS audit in the Nursery School
    • 5 day leading and managing quality improvement (LMQI) training for Nursery School staff and local settings and schools, including a small group guided observation per delegate
    • Moderation training for 3 members of the Nursery School and local authority staff

  • ‘Centre of Innovation’ project 2013-14

    Aims:

    • To use ITERS/ECERS scales to provide quality improvement support for the 12 PVI settings within reach of Sheringham Nursery School likely to be offering free early education places to two year olds
    • To create a peer support network based around ITERS/ECERS, with Sheringham Nursery School at the centre
    • In doing this, to help ensure that children attending these settings experience the high quality needed to improve their later life chances

    Elements:

    • Awareness briefing for settings
    • 3 day self-evaluation training course for two practitioners per setting
    • Baseline and follow-up ITERS/ECERS audits in each project setting, to provide detailed information to guide quality improvement and a measure of improvement one year on
